Remodeling Guidelines to Re-Green Your Interior Design
Remodeling Guidelines to Re-Green Your Interior Design
Last week, at its annual conference in New Orleans, the American Society of Interior Designers released REGREEN, its set of guidelines for home remodeling with a shade of green.
In contrast with LEED, which scores and certifies green buildings, REGREEN is a set of guidelines, designed to give homeowners and interior design and buildings professionals the background and resources to evaluate green products and energy systems in the systems-based context of how an entire home operates.
As part of the (hooray for tree-free), the guidelines are accompanied by 10 case studies covering different project types -- kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel, finished basement remodel, gut rehab, etc. -- and is chock-full of home remodeling and interior design ideas, all with a green point of view.
The guidelines are just that -- guidelines -- rather than a script to be followed, which is closer to LEED's approach, and that has both drawbacks and benefits. Doing it right will require getting everybody -- including interior designers, contractors, sub-contractors and homeowners -- all on the same page, and the systems-based approach will require that everything work well together; executing a green home remodel won't be as easy as slapping in some bamboo cabinets and plugging in an Energy Star fridge. But if you're going to do it, you might as well do it well, right?

Petalas Coffee Table Looks Like a Flower But Without all the Perfume
The Petalas Coffee Table is a Brazilian design inspired by flowers. The table is made by the Etel company and uses eight different wood panels to create each petal. The wood is shaped and bent in such a way so each of the eight legs of the table is actually part of its corresponding petal. The Petalas Coffee Table measures 55 x 55 x 12 inches, and I'm sure you'll find an appropriate use for it as soon as you have purchased yours. Now only if there was a way to make these Petalas actually blossom each day and engulf the living room with their perfume... Via Etel

Trick Bookcase Can Hold All Your Cooking Books and Then Some
The Trick Bookcase in the images below is not just a simple bookcase. It is, in fact, a lot more complex than that. The Trick Bookcase is apparently a kitchen table, although it can be placed anywhere else too, that also hides a couple of chairs right underneath it. Both the table and the chairs act as fancy storage solution, but make sure you don't spill your cook books, journals, and whatever else you decide to store down there during the day while you're pulling and pushing those chairs away. The Trick Bookcase modular furniture concept should definitely be considered for your crowded small apartment but not only. If there's one thing I can object to is not having enough legroom under the chair but you can't have it all, can you? Via Sakurah
Schulte Design Modern Coffee Tables Come with Moving Parts
Who wouldn't want a coffee table that comes with various moving parts? That way you could adjust its position and its height according to your current needs, not to mention making the most of the limited space you have to deal with. Schulte Design has not one but four such modern coffee tables, the Audium, the Scala, the Oregon and the Scala Quadrat. The first three come just with movable tabletops while the last one will also let you adjust its height. The four coffee tables are very similar when it comes to the general design idea. They all sit on a single leg, which allows the tabletop to move sideways according to your needs. That hard part now is choosing one of the four models available from Schulte Design to be your next coffee table. Via Schulte Design

Sweetch18 Is Mostly a Table Unless It's a Chair
Small home demand appropriate furniture and modular designs might be the way to go. That way you could satisfy all your furniture needs while making the most of your current living space. The Sweetch18 is such a piece of modern furniture, which acts both as a table but also as a chair. However, the Sweetch18 can never be a table and a char at the same time, unless you buy two of them. The Sweetch18 looks pretty comfortable as a chair and seems to be a great coffee table too. The design has won an award in Paris and it will be on display at the Inno Design Tech Show in Hong Kong between December 2-4. Anyone ready to order one? Via Cerekapery

Alexandra von Furstenberg's Bullet Coffee Table
Alexandra von Furstenberg may have a famous ex mother-in-law ( Diane von Furstenberg ) but that hasn't stopped the designer from really coming into her own. Famous for having a penchant for lucite and playing with the realms of fashion and design, her new Bullet Coffee Table is infused with a rare dark energy as it seems to resemble a bullet inspired coffin! But maybe its my own morbid imagination that is seeing a resemblance with a coffin since the designer is aiming for something completely different. Von Furstenberg's Bullet is constructed of 18 clear acrylic panels which are precariously joint at each of the 18 junction to give an illusion of a life size diamond. Alexandra von Furstenberg's designs are not everyone's cup of tea but there is no denying that the designer shows flashes of genius when it comes to mixing fashion, fantasy and furniture

Kinzo Air Cabin Is Futuristic And Functional
Design studio Kinzo has a penchant for streamlined aesthetics and forms that borrow heavily from jet fighters and airplanes. Hence its no coincidence that their critically acclaimed Kinzo Air Cabin follows in the same vein. Characterized by a scuplturalistic silhouette, a futuristic functionality and almost abstract aesthetics, the Air Cabin is a testament to modern day engineering and highlights intelligent design. The spacious file storage system can hold up to 90 files and comes equipped with flush-mounted sliding doors and a niftily designed lift and slide mechanism. The unusual asymmetrical form factor may be too much for the traditionalists, but there is no denying that the Kinzo Air is an extremely well-designed work cabinet that has been styled with a rare contemporary chutzpah.
"Kinzo Air is an office furniture programme with a resolutely futuristic design approach," said Karim El-Ishmawi, Kinzo designer. "Every piece of furniture has a distinctive sculptural and architectural quality - functionality does not need to rhyme with blandness. Supersized cable ducts, steal skids instead of table legs and many other details make office work easier and more inspirational. Our filing cabinet is a logical addition to the programme.
